A woman in her mid-twenties was walking to her car when she was grabbed from behind. The attacker put one hand over her mouth and wrapped his other arm around her waist. It seems that we are hearing about someone going into a business full of people and opening fire more often these days. The reasons for the shootings are as random as the places they occur. There really is no way to predict what restaurant, theater, or mall will host such a tragic event.

There are three key pro-active strategies that can help save your life and the lives of people around you, should you happen to be involved in one of these horrible scenarios.

1) RUN

Being aware of the natural sounds in your environment will allow you to pick out unusual noises that occur. These unusual noises like gun fire should cause you to become hyper alert and engage your pre-planned course of action. If you are able to flee, you must find the first exit available. Encourage others to go with you. Take a leadership role. Your lives could depend on it. Exit using the most straight path you can navigate. Students at Columbine dove out the windows to escape. That may not be an option available to you, but you should be aware that it is an option.

2) HIDE

If you can’t run, then you must hide. Find items near you that you think could stop or slow bullets such as cinder block walls, solid core doors, metal desks, or doors. This is called cover. If you can’t find cover then you must find concealment. Barricade yourself by creating a barrier with the objects you find. Concealment is simply a barrier that hides you, but can be breached by ballistics. Call 9-1-1 if you have your cell phone. It does not matter how many people you may think already called.

3) FIGHT

If you come in contact with a criminal you may only have one opportunity to react. If an active shooter enters your location, and you have no means of escape or a place to hide, the only other option you have is to fight. Do not try this alone. Pick up any object you can use as a weapon such as a pot of hot coffee, a chair, or even a book to strike the attacker as soon as they open the door. The element of surprise will give you a momentary advantage. Work together with the people around you. Coordinate your attack together. You must overwhelm and disarm the attacker.

If you have a plan, your chances of survival will greatly increase, but whatever your decision, you must act quickly and decisively. Remember, you don’t get a second chance when you only have seconds to react.

In July, 14 people lost their lives in the Colorado theater shooting. In August, 11 were shot outside the Empire State Building. Even in Little Rock, the violent crime index is well above that of the national average. You must be pro-active. You must protect yourself.
