When Self-Defense Goes Badly
The Death of Trayvon Martin | An Avoidable Tragedy?
A Sad Reality
The fatal sequence of events
Tragedy always has been and will unfortunately always be a reality in the world to some degree. We are all aware of the recent news concerning Trayvon Martin and George Zimmerman. The country is divided over many details in this case. Some feel this is a purely racial issue, while others feel that Trayvon could have been anyone’s son, white or black. There was a gap between the phone recording of Zimmerman with the police dispatcher and the time in which police arrived on the dark scene. What exactly triggered the fatal sequence of events sadly remains unknown to the world watching.
Was Zimmerman Out of Line?
Some feel that Zimmerman practiced restraint by only shooting Martin once, and that the one shot was done in pure self-defense. Others feel that it was completely inappropriate for Zimmerman to be carrying the gun in the first place and that he had no right or reason to shoot. What do you think? If you’re going to carry a gun, how important is it to you to carry responsibly? DTI offers in-person and online courses on how to use firearms responsibly, appropriately and with the necessary skill set.
A Less-Than-Fatal Alternative
Was a gun the right choice?
Some feel that Zimmerman completely crossed the line by following Martin, especially because he was told not to pursue the boy by the police dispatcher. Others feel that Zimmerman acted in a way of self-defense and sought to protect the neighborhood by trying to figure out what the teenager in the hoodie was up to. How would you choose to protect yourself in this situation?
Imagine if Zimmerman has chosen a Strike Spike instead of a gun
Take a moment to consider how this exchange might have ended had Zimmerman not been carrying a gun. After all, the only reason he had a right to be carrying it in the first place was purportedly to protect himself and his wife from a neighborhood pit bull who had become a threat. Imagine that Zimmerman had the Strike Spike on his person in case any threatening situation arose. Do you feel Zimmerman was right to use his gun, or should he have considered a less drastic approach to defending himself?
A way to defend without fatally wounding
The Strike Spike is a cutting-edge self-defense tool for several reasons. One, it allows you to protect yourself by creating a window of time in which you can get away. Two, it allows you to damage your attacker by gouging the skin on contact, but not fatally wounding the person. If the Strike Spike had been Zimmerman’s tool of self-defense, we’d be looking at quite a different, and undoubtedly less tragic outcome.
A Nation Torn
The only thing we all know is that tragedies like this can be avoided
Our nation is torn. Many are grieving. Many are angry. The truth is, none of us were there. We can have extreme emotions and strong opinions regarding the tragedy, but we didn’t actually see, with our own eyes, what happened. The only common ground we as a nation have to stand on is a sense of sadness that such tragedies occur at all, and really all we can know for sure, is that these tragedies certainly can be avoided in many similar events. Where do we go from here? We all have a choice when it comes to self-defense.
